Wire: new wave.
Beh, penso che ci sia anche la Generazione Me Me Me, dove è molto più importante farsi un selfie con le spalle rivolte verso la band, con la band nella foto dietro di loro; diventa tutto incentrato sul pubblico e non su ciò che è sul palco. Deve sempre essere un'esperienza per il pubblico, ma la band è effettivamente sul palco a fare qualcosa, non è solo lo sfondo per il tuo selfie.

Di tanto in tanto vi segnalo qualche chicca, magari band non famosissime, giusto per allargare gli orizzonti, cercare qualche novità e proporvi nuovi ascolti. Oggi un ibrido, gli Wire, una band con alle spalle mezzo secolo di onorata presenza sulle scene internazionali. Figli bizzarri del punk, da subito sono però lontani da ogni maniera, e hanno gettato le basi della stagione new wave, influenzando molte band. Tre album essenziali per la musica tra anni 70 e 80, acclamati dalla critica: “Pink Flag”, “Chairs Missing” e “154”. Un fuoco che non si è ancora spento dopo quasi mezzo secolo, segnale di una forte spinta creativa. La ricerca di essenzialità, come nei quadri di Cézanne, è una chiara scelta poetica, quindi strutture musicali spoglie, geometriche, canzoni dirette, senza fronzoli, un atteggiamento esplicito e coerente, che li ha tenuti lontani dal successo planetario, ma ha coltivato uno stuolo di seguaci fedeli di decennio in decennio. Il vino buono non è per tutti.
A metà degli anni 70 al Watford Art College qualcosa bolle in pentola. Il punk sta dilagando, ma c’è chi come Colin Newman inizia a coltivare altre idee e a fare del punk metodo e non stile, filosofia e non maniera, cercando di aprire nuovi linguaggi e indubbiamente gli Wire possono considerarsi a pieno titolo tra i capostipiti della new wave, ovvero di una nuova declinazione del pop e del rock. Colin Newman da subito è interessato alla musica sperimentale e gioca con nastri e altre diavolerie insieme ad un amico già assai familiare alla scena dell’art rock e dello sperimentalismo UK: Brian Eno fresco fresco dall’abbandono dei Roxy Music di Bryan Ferry. Abbiamo così una bizzarra miscela di ingredienti per il nostro piatto di oggi, punk, elettronica, ambient, rock, new wave. Cosa ne uscirà?
Presto attorno a Newman si crea un nucleo con lo stilista Graham Lewis al basso, Robert Gotobed alla batteria e il tecnico del suono Bruce Gilbert, poi secondo chitarrista, e con questo line up i nostri entrano sotto contratto con la EMI con il nome definitivo di Wire. Subito con il secondo album “Chair Missing” appare chiara la loro devianza, come evidenti il coacervo di menti creative qui raccolte e gli ego importanti all’interno della band. Tra Colin Newman e Graham Lewis, tra la forma canzone da preservare e l’ala più sperimentale ed estrema si crea rapidamente una spaccatura, una faglia, e i nostri eroi conosceranno molte pause del progetto Wire, sviluppando progetti solistici molto interessanti, come gli album solisti di Newman, il progetto He Said di Lewis i Duet Emmo di Lewis e Gilbert. Un fiume di idee sonore che vi invito ad esplorare…. Qui un assaggio con gli He Said ed il loro celebre singolo “Pump”.
Come un albero, il progetto Wire conosce diverse stagioni, dai ragazzi sbarbati del college negli anni 70 agli uomini maturi tra anni 80 e 90 fino agli attuali musicisti avviati alla terza età con una grinta mai vista. La musica scorre inarrestabile ricca di sperimentazioni e ancora oggi troviamo gli Wire pronti a stupirci con una melodia ficcante, con una canzone sospesa su un tappeto elettronico, con un concerto fulminante di un gruppetto di settantenni, capaci al contempo di sfoderare composizioni elettroniche da far impallidire un giovinastro di 20 anni o di pettinare con un riff di chitarra distorto anche i capelli più ribelli. Come fanno? Qual è il segreto degli Wire, di Colin Newman, Graham Lewis e degli altri?
A mio vedere è il segreto di molti artisti di questa generazione sta non nella ricerca di uno stile, di una serie di segni da replicare secondo un alfabeto condiviso, in un virtuosismo sterile verso il proprio strumento, ma nel porsi delle questioni di metodo e filosofiche. Qual è il metodo degli Wire? Qui ci viene in aiuto il grande architetto Adolf Loos e la sua massima dove “l’ornamento è delitto”. Il punk prima e la new wave poi hanno portato alla ricerca di un’essenzialità espressiva che era estranea al progressive, barocco, sinfonico, impegnato in lunghe suite. Gli Wire adottano la filosofia di Loos: minimali, diretti, poco inclini alla diluizione, all’ornamento, al tappeto sonoro, testi diretti e musica che in 3 minuti dice quel che deve dire. Un minimalismo che ha fatto scuola, ha tagliato assoli e virtuosismi a favore di un espressionismo chiaro, ma mai superficiale. Siamo infatti di fronte ad una band che ha aperto nuove stradee sperimentato senza compromessi. Questo costruisce un approccio sistematico che va oltre qualsiasi maniera e le diverse maniere possono essere utilizzate come ci si cambia di vestito a seconda delle evenienze e delle esigenze creative. Alla fine è la lezione di Bowie e dei suoi changes, cara a Brian Eno, amico di Colin Newman. La musica per questi artisti non è uncome genere, ma diventa gesto artistico. Well, I think there is also the Me Me Me Generation, where it's much more important to take a selfie with their backs to the band, with the band in the photo behind them; it all becomes centered on the audience and not on what's on stage. It should always be an experience for the audience, but the band is actually up on stage doing something; they are not just the backdrop for your selfie.

From time to time, I point out some gems, maybe not very famous bands, just to broaden horizons, seek out some novelties, and propose new listens. Today, an oddity, Wire, a band with half a century of honorable presence on the international scene behind them. Quirky children of punk, they were immediately far from any mannerism and laid the foundations of the new wave season, influencing many bands. Three essential albums for music between the '70s and '80s, acclaimed by critics: "Pink Flag," "Chairs Missing," and "154." A fire that has not yet gone out after almost half a century, a sign of a strong creative drive. The search for simplicity, as in Cézanne's paintings, is a clear poetic choice, hence bare, geometric musical structures, direct songs, without frills, an explicit and coherent attitude that kept them away from planetary success but cultivated a horde of faithful followers decade after decade. Good wine is not for everyone.
In the mid-'70s at Watford Art College, something was brewing. Punk was spreading, but there were those like Colin Newman who began to cultivate other ideas and made punk a method and not a style, philosophy and not mannerism, trying to open up new languages and undoubtedly, Wire can be fully considered among the progenitors of new wave, a new interpretation of pop and rock. From the beginning, Colin Newman was interested in experimental music and played with tapes and other gadgets along with a friend already very familiar with the UK art rock and experimental scene: Brian Eno, freshly departed from Bryan Ferry's Roxy Music. Thus, we have a bizarre mix of ingredients for our dish today: punk, electronic, ambient, rock, new wave. What will come out of it?
Soon a nucleus formed around Newman with designer Graham Lewis on bass, Robert Gotobed on drums, and sound engineer Bruce Gilbert, later the second guitarist. With this lineup, they signed with EMI under the final name of Wire. Right from the second album "Chairs Missing," their deviation became clear, as did the amalgamation of creative minds gathered here and the significant egos within the band. A rift quickly developed between Colin Newman and Graham Lewis, between the need to preserve song form and the more experimental and extreme wing, and our heroes would experience many pauses in the Wire project, developing very interesting solo projects, such as Newman's solo albums, Lewis's He Said project, and Lewis and Gilbert's Duet Emmo. Like a tree, the Wire project has seen various seasons, from college boys in the '70s to mature men between the '80s and '90s to today's musicians approaching old age with unprecedented vigor. The music flows unstoppable, rich in experimentation, and even today we find Wire ready to surprise us with a sharp melody, a song suspended on an electronic carpet, a lightning concert by a group of septuagenarians capable of unveiling electronic compositions that would make a 20-year-old pale or tame the most rebellious hair with a distorted guitar riff. How do they do it? What is the secret of Wire, of Colin Newman, Graham Lewis, and the others?
In my view, it is the secret of many artists of this generation, not in seeking a style, a series of signs to replicate according to a shared alphabet, in a sterile virtuosity towards one's instrument, but in posing methodological and philosophical questions. What is Wire's method? Here the great architect Adolf Loos and his maxim where "ornament is crime" come to our aid. Punk first and new wave later led to the search for an expressive simplicity that was alien to the progressive, baroque, symphonic, engaged in long suites. Wire adopt Loos's philosophy: minimal, direct, not inclined to dilution, ornamentation, sound carpets, direct lyrics, and music that says what it needs to say in 3 minutes. A minimalism that has set a standard, cutting solos and virtuosity in favor of clear expressionism but never superficial. We are indeed facing a band that has opened new paths and experimented without compromise. This builds a systematic approach that goes beyond any mannerism, and different manners can be used as one changes clothes depending on the circumstances and creative needs. In the end, it's Bowie's lesson of changes, dear to Brian Eno, a friend of Colin Newman. For these artists, music is not a genre but becomes an artistic gesture.
