Quando si parla di drum and bass, è impossibile non menzionare Goldie. Nato Clifford Joseph Price nel 1965 a Walsall, Inghilterra, Goldie è uno degli artisti più influenti e rivoluzionari della scena musicale britannica. Pioniere del sound jungle e drum and bass negli anni ’90, ha trasformato un movimento underground in un'esplosione culturale globale, grazie al suo stile inconfondibile e alla sua visione artistica audace che mescola soul, rap, ambient, elettronica di Detroit, jazz. Un gorgo di influenze che riesce sempre a sorprendere e ha attirato l’attenzione di grandi musicisti mainstream come David Bowie, che qui presta la sua voce in questo lungo e per me bellissimo brano.
Goldie ha avuto un'infanzia difficile, cresciuto in case-famiglia fin dall’età di tre anni e immerso nella cultura urbana britannica. Fuori dai binari per nascita invece di deragliare è riuscito nel miracolo di fare dell’arte una cura alle ferite che ha dovuto patire fin dall’inizio della sua esistenza, ferite serie tra cui abusi sessuali. L’arte sa fare questi miracoli e Goldie lo certifica avendo convogliato tutta la sua amarezza in processi creativi. Prima della musica, si è fatto un nome nel mondo del graffiti, diventando un artista rispettato nella scena hip-hop underground del Regno Unito e allacciando contatti con crew come quella di Banksy. Questa sensibilità visuale e ribelle, underground e fuori dal mainstream ha poi influenzato fortemente la sua musica.
Il suo incontro con la cultura rave e la scena breakbeat alla fine degli anni ’80 è una svolta. Inizia a produrre musica elettronica e ben presto si distinse per la sua abilità nel mescolare breakbeat frenetici, atmosfere oscure e suoni futuristici. Nel 1995, Goldie pubblica Timeless, uno degli album più iconici nella storia della drum and bass. Il disco, e in particolare la traccia d’apertura “Inner City Life”, è un capolavoro che fonde breakbeat complessi, linee vocali soul (grazie alla cantante Diane Charlemagne) e una produzione innovativa. Timeless ha rotto le barriere tra musica underground e mainstream, portando la jungle nei club di tutto il mondo e nelle classifiche britanniche.
Goldie non è solo un artista, ma anche un imprenditore culturale. È il fondatore di Metalheadz, un’etichetta discografica che è diventata la casa per alcuni dei più importanti produttori della scena drum and bass: da Photek a Doc Scott, da Ed Rush a Dillinja. Metalheadz non è solo un'etichetta, ma una vera e propria istituzione che ha definito lo standard sonoro e stilistico del genere. Artista poliedrico sfoga la sua irrequietezza in mille modi, ma sempre in chiave espressiva, ha recitato in film (come The World Is Not Enough e Snatch), partecipato a programmi televisivi, scritto un’autobiografia e proseguito la sua carriera nelle arti visive. Ha anche collaborato con orchestre sinfoniche, portando la sua musica nei teatri e avvicinando pubblici diversi al linguaggio della drum and bass.
L’influenza di Goldie va ben oltre la drum and bass. Ha ispirato intere generazioni di produttori elettronici, ma anche artisti visivi, registi, musicisti classici e performer. La sua estetica – aggressiva ma raffinata, urbana ma spirituale – ha influenzato tutto, dalla moda streetwear alla grafica dei club, passando per l’arte contemporanea. Ha dimostrato che la musica elettronica può essere concettuale, emotiva e politica, rompendo lo stereotipo del DJ come semplice intrattenitore. When it comes to drum and bass, it's impossible not to mention Goldie. Born Clifford Joseph Price in 1965 in Walsall, England, Goldie is one of the most influential and revolutionary artists of the British music scene. A pioneer of the jungle and drum and bass sound in the 1990s, he transformed an underground movement into a global cultural explosion, thanks to his unmistakable style and bold artistic vision that blends soul, rap, ambient, Detroit techno, and jazz. A vortex of influences that never fails to surprise and has attracted the attention of major mainstream musicians like David Bowie, who lends his voice to this long and, for me, beautiful track.
Goldie had a difficult childhood, raised in foster care from the age of three and immersed in British urban culture. Born off-track, instead of derailing he achieved the miracle of turning art into a remedy for the wounds he endured from the very beginning of his existence—serious wounds including sexual abuse. Art can work these miracles, and Goldie proves it by channeling all his bitterness into creative processes. Before music, he made a name for himself in the world of graffiti, becoming a respected artist in the UK’s underground hip-hop scene and connecting with crews like Banksy's. This visual and rebellious sensitivity, underground and outside the mainstream, would later have a strong influence on his music.
His encounter with rave culture and the breakbeat scene in the late ’80s was a turning point. He began producing electronic music and soon stood out for his ability to blend frantic breakbeats, dark atmospheres, and futuristic sounds. In 1995, Goldie released Timeless, one of the most iconic albums in the history of drum and bass. The record, and in particular the opening track “Inner City Life,” is a masterpiece that combines complex breakbeats, soulful vocal lines (thanks to singer Diane Charlemagne), and innovative production. Timeless broke down the barriers between underground and mainstream music, bringing jungle into clubs around the world and onto UK charts.
Goldie is not just an artist, but also a cultural entrepreneur. He is the founder of Metalheadz, a record label that became home to some of the most important producers in the drum and bass scene: from Photek to Doc Scott, from Ed Rush to Dillinja.
