In quegli anni stavamo offrendo alle persone un parco giochi, un'opportunità per riunirsi in sicurezza, in uno spazio confortevole dove potevano esprimere sé stessi e il loro amore per la musica e la danza senza sentirsi limitati.
Non mi vergogno ad ammettere che gran parte di ciò che trovo interessante è molto più vario rispetto alla sola musica dance.

Con Francois Kevorkian incontriamo oggi su (((RadioPianPiano))) uno dei padri della musica dance contemporanea, un uomo che quest’anno ha compiuto 70 anni ed è considerato tra i padri dell’house music e un protagonista della sua evoluzione nella deep house. Ha suonato in locali leggendari come lo Studio 54, la disco frequentata da Andy Warhol o il Paradise Garage dove ha incontrato Larry Levan, personaggio chiave della musica house. A New York ha fatto la storia in serate come al “Cielo” e remixato tra gli altri gli Smiths, Adam Ant, Kraftwerk, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Diana Ross, Gloria Estefan e U2. È lui l’uomo dietro al mixer per Violator, il disco che ha rilanciato i Depeche Mode. Dagli anni 70 Francois K è sulla cresta dell’onda.
Cosa si capisce incrociando i suoi remix e le sue produzioni? Si nota un grande eccletismo capace di spaziare dal jazz a sapori latini e brasiliani per poi virare nell’elettronica più glaciale. Evidente anche la capacità di miscelare i suoni in un grande equilibrio e profondità, i suoi mix sono infatti multidimensionali, ovvero hanno linee melodiche in evidenza, e via via sempre più indietro in una stratificazione che dà spessore a tutti i suoi lavori, caratterizzati da una classe indiscutibile. Non a caso Francois K suona nelle migliori discoteche del pianeta, proprio per la sua capacità di creare atmosfere diverse che dal dub all’house variano a seconda delle serate e del pubblico.
Ma perché parlare di Francois K e ancor prima qual è il senso di far accomodare di tanto in tanto nel nostro ristorante sonoro un dj? Partiamo dalla seconda domanda. Possiamo dire che i generi musicali siano a loro modo “finiti”, ovvero che sempre più si assista ad una riproposizione di stilemi che non sono novità assoluta, ma una riproposizione di qualcosa di già sentito? Risponderei affermativamente. Il XXI secolo fatica a proporci novità assolute ed i giovanissimi ascoltano spesso artisti che sono icone del passato e l’hip hop in una serie di varianti è insieme all’elettronica una delle ultime novità emerse nella musica popolare. Il dj diventa in questa realtà il “semidio” che raccoglie conchiglie sulla spiaggia e imbastisce collane, selezionando sia canzoni che suoni da tutti i generi per costruire e ricostruire in un eterno lego componibile e scomponibile nuovi brani. Il dj è un grande ascoltatore di musica che smembra e riassembla in un processo che a suo modo è infinito.
Perché Francois K? Perché dall’alto dei suoi settant’anni ha visto gli anni 70 e la New York di Basquiat, Warhol e Haring, ha navigato l’esplosione dell’elettronica tra anni 80 e 90 e le innovazioni tecnologiche annesse e connesse, sia nel lavoro in studio sia nel proporre musica come dj. È un testimone, una memoria storica. Incarna inoltre ad alti livelli questa capacità del dj di smontare e e rimontare suoni a livelli qualitativi molto alti. Il suo equilibrio e la sua cura nel creare mix è oggettivamente fuori dal comune ed ascoltare una selezione dei suoi brani non è mai un’esperienza chiusa nell’univeso della dance music, ma offre decisamente più sfaccettature, scivolando nel jazz, nel dub, nella musica da ascolto e anche nella ricerca. I lavori di Francois K hanno una profondità musicale non indifferente se saprete avvicinare la sua musica senza pregiudizi. Il nostro si è esibito non solo in dance hall, ma in musei prestigiosi come il MOMA in compagnia di Kraftwerk, per fare un esempio.

Today on (((RadioPianPiano))) with François Kevorkian, we meet one of the fathers of contemporary dance music, a man who turned 70 this year and is considered among the pioneers of house music and a key figure in its evolution into deep house. He has performed in legendary venues such as Studio 54, the club frequented by Andy Warhol, and Paradise Garage, where he met Larry Levan, a central figure in house music. In New York, he made history with nights like those at "Cielo" and has remixed tracks for artists including The Smiths, Adam Ant, Kraftwerk, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Diana Ross, Gloria Estefan, and U2. He is the man behind the mixer for Violator, the album that revitalized Depeche Mode. Since the 1970s, François K has been at the forefront of the music scene.
What can we discern by exploring his remixes and productions? A remarkable eclecticism stands out, capable of ranging from jazz to Latin and Brazilian flavors, and then diving into colder, electronic sounds. Also evident is his ability to blend sounds with great balance and depth. His mixes are, in fact, multidimensional, featuring prominent melodic lines layered progressively in a stratification that adds richness to all his works, marked by indisputable class. It is no coincidence that François K performs in the best clubs worldwide, precisely because of his ability to create diverse atmospheres that range from dub to house, adapting to the nights and audiences.
But why talk about François K? And even before that, what is the point of occasionally including a DJ in our sonic restaurant? Let’s start with the second question. Can we say that musical genres are, in their way, "finite," meaning that we are increasingly witnessing the repetition of stylistic elements rather than absolute novelties, a re-proposition of something already heard? I would answer affirmatively. The 21st century struggles to offer us absolute novelties, and young people often listen to artists who are icons of the past. Hip hop, in its various forms, and electronic music are among the last significant innovations to emerge in popular music. In this context, the DJ becomes the "demigod" who collects seashells on the beach and strings them into necklaces, selecting both songs and sounds from all genres to build and rebuild new tracks in an eternal, modular Lego-like process. The DJ is a great listener of music who deconstructs and reassembles it in a process that, in its way, is infinite.
Why François K? Because at 70 years old, he has witnessed the 1970s and the New York of Basquiat, Warhol, and Haring. He navigated the explosion of electronic music between the 1980s and 1990s and the technological innovations tied to it, both in studio work and in DJing. He is a witness, a historical memory. Moreover, he embodies at a high level this ability of the DJ to deconstruct and reconstruct sounds with exceptional quality. His balance and meticulousness in creating mixes are objectively extraordinary, and listening to a selection of his tracks is never an experience confined to the universe of dance music. It offers much more, slipping into jazz, dub, ambient music, and even experimental territories. François K's works possess a remarkable musical depth if you approach his music without prejudice. He has performed not only in dance halls but also in prestigious museums such as the MoMA, alongside Kraftwerk, to name just one example.
