Confesso una idiosincrasia forte per l’hip hop, per la sua povertà melodica e il suo approccio ai testi spesso imbarazzante, stereotipato, violento, volgare e alla fin fine noioso, il tutto con notevoli eccezioni di cui prima o poi parleremo. Simmetricamente sono attratto da house e drum and bass, anche dozzinali, perché tra sconosciuti producer si trovano piccoli tesori di musica elettronica e alla fine la danza è un rituale ancestrale in cui si libera il corpo e qualcosa di rituale è rimasto. Chi apprezza hip hop potrebbe a questo punto contestarmi che anche questo genere si balla, si pensi alla breakdance e avrebbe ragione… Ci ritorneremo, ma oggi serviamo un po’ di house “romantica” con molti autori a marchio Anjunadeep: un’etichetta che vi consiglio di seguire, perché a mio parere fa una selezione di artisti interessante e di qualità.
Trovo anche che sia bello scivolare dalla musica colta, classica e contemporanea alle musiche più popolari e dozzinali senza pregiudizi, come ci si ferma per strada per un panino e non si ha sempre voglia di ristoranti esclusivi. La musica dance stessa è stratificata in diversi stili e oggi navighiamo un po’ di house d’atmosfera e ci concediamo un’ora e mezza abbondante per acchiappare l’aria dei primi finestrini abbassati, delle prime giornate di sole che scaldano, della biancheria che torna ad esser stesa all’aperto, della primavera che alla mattina presto si sente distintamente nella vivacità tutta diversa del canto degli uccelli rispetto all’inverno e nelle prime serate che diventano notti dove si tira tardi. E ovviamente nelle fioriture di margherite, viole e primule.
Nella playlist che ho cucinato le atmosfere sono curate, molte canzoni e producers hanno sonorità cinematografiche da titoli di coda di qualche film di fantasia, la cassa pari di 4/4 impera, le voci sono notturne ed impastate, tutto rimanda ad un pulsare ritmico, ad una scansione che almeno alla guida di un auto mi accompagna piacevolmente e in casa è comunque un viaggio, un perdersi in una specie di ipnosi.
Sì l’ipnosi è il centro nella mia offerta musicale di oggi. Il viaggiare in una dimensione parallela, per uscire da un’atmosfera che ricorda sempre più qui in Europa gli anni peggiori del secolo scorso, con i profughi, l’impoverimento, la guerra, il tradimento dei valori dei padri, la libertà come bene trascurabile, secondario e non assoluto, la democrazia come impaccio e non come essenza. Nello scorrere inesorabile del fiume della storia che tutto travolge ci si sente come foglie portate via dal vento. Un attimo di oblio, di saturazione sonora è anche un giusto anestetico, una perdita di coscienza, un momento di cancellazione della memoria, una pausa dallo scorrere ossessivo delle informazioni e del sangue. Sangue di innocenti.
La danza è rituale apotropaico oltre che di alterazione della coscienza. Non so se gli spiriti malefici si dissolveranno inghiottiti dalla loro stessa propaganda o dilagheranno avvelenando l’atmosfera come accade ora, non sono un mago e la mia sfera di cristallo è opaca. I must confess a strong idiosyncrasy towards hip-hop, due to its lack of melodic richness and its often embarrassing, stereotypical, violent, vulgar, and ultimately boring approach to lyrics—though, of course, there are notable exceptions that we will discuss sooner or later. Conversely, I am drawn to house and drum and bass, even the more generic ones, because among unknown producers, one can find small gems of electronic music. After all, dance itself is an ancestral ritual in which the body is set free, and something ritualistic still remains. Someone who appreciates hip-hop might argue that this genre is also meant for dancing—think of breakdancing—and they would be right… We’ll get back to that. But today, let’s serve up some “romantic” house music, featuring many artists under the Anjunadeep label—an imprint I highly recommend following, as I believe they curate an interesting and high-quality selection of artists.
I also find it beautiful to slide seamlessly from classical, contemporary, and highbrow music to the more popular and even trivial genres, without prejudice—just as one might stop for a street sandwich rather than always craving an exclusive restaurant experience. Dance music itself is layered across different styles, and today, we are navigating some atmospheric house. Let’s give ourselves a solid hour and a half to soak in the feeling of the first rolled-down car windows, the first warm sunny days, laundry hanging outside again, and spring making itself known—felt distinctly in the renewed liveliness of birdsong compared to winter, in the first evenings that stretch into late nights. And, of course, in the blooming of daisies, violets, and primroses.
In the playlist I’ve put together, the atmospheres are carefully curated. Many songs and producers bring cinematic sounds, reminiscent of end credits from some fantasy film. The steady 4/4 kick drum reigns supreme, the vocals are nocturnal and hazy, everything pulsates rhythmically, creating a cadence that, at the very least, makes for a pleasant driving companion—or, at home, becomes a journey, a way to lose oneself in a kind of hypnosis.
Yes, hypnosis is at the heart of today’s musical offering. Traveling into a parallel dimension, escaping an atmosphere that increasingly resembles the worst years of the past century here in Europe—refugees, impoverishment, war, the betrayal of our forefathers’ values, freedom treated as negligible, secondary rather than absolute, democracy seen as an obstacle rather than an essence. In the relentless flow of history that sweeps everything away, one feels like a leaf carried off by the wind. A moment of oblivion, of sonic saturation, can serve as a fitting anesthetic—a loss of consciousness, a moment of erasing memory, a pause from the obsessive flow of information and blood. The blood of the innocent.
Dance is not only a ritual of altered consciousness but also an apotropaic one. I do not know if the malevolent spirits will dissolve, swallowed by their own propaganda, or if they will spread like poison in the air—as is happening now.
